Long Swim

I remember entering the Portishead Annual Long Swim with my cousin and friend. On this particular occasion Dad came down to watch me. Now I had every intention of just having a leisurely swim with my friend. Whilst we were getting "larded up" to protect us from the cold water my Dad came over to me and quietly said " If you're going to do this swim do your best and try and you never know you might win it".  I immediately went over to my friend and told her what dad had said. So I would no longer be swimming with her, fortunately she was a good friend and a good swimmer and totally understood.

Anyway to cut a long swim short, I did indeed win the race! As happy as I was, nothing could take away the pleasure I got from the beaming smile on my Dad's face as I got out of the water in first place. It's a day that has always lived with me. Thanks Dad.
